Diamond Symmetry
Choosing a loose diamond for use in an engagement ring, necklace or other setting is a big investment. While many buyers are well versed in the 4Cs – color, cut, clarity and carat weight – they may not fully understand the other characteristics that help determine a diamond’s quality and ultimate value.

Diamond symmetry describes the exactness of the shape of a stone. It also describes the arrangement and placement of the facets during the cutting process. Symmetry is one of the many characteristic categories diamond buyers will find mentioned on a diamond certification report for good reason: it represents the craftsmanship involved in the stone’s cutting.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and other gemological laboratories consider symmetry when completing diamond certification reports. GIA grades the symmetry of a diamond based on two categories:
  • Proportion-related features
  • Facet-related features
GIA grade a loose diamond’s symmetry on a five-point scale. Loose diamonds may earn the following symmetry grades depending on the features gemologists notice when examining a stone in the lab:
  • Excellent – This rating is given to stones that have no symmetry features (flaws) to very minor ones that can only be viewed with a degree of difficulty using 10X magnification.

  • Very good – Stones that only show minor symmetry features when viewed face-up at 10X magnification earn this rating.

  • Good – A stone in this grade category has noticeable symmetry features when viewed face-up at 10X magnification. A diamond of this grade may have an appearance that is affected without the need for magnification to see the imperfections.

  • Fair – Symmetry features are obvious to the eye when viewed face-up at 10X magnification. Stones of this grade may have an overall appearance that is affected when viewed without magnification, as well.

  • Poor – This grade is given to loose stones that have very prominent symmetry features when viewed at 10X magnification. These features also significantly affect the appearance of the stone when viewed by the naked eye.

Why Does Symmetry Matter?

Symmetry is included in diamond certificate reports, such as those issued by GIA, because it represents the quality of craftsmanship that went into shaping and cutting of a diamond. When a diamond has high marks in the symmetry department, it is likely to deliver a more visually pleasing presentation. In addition, when coupled with other features, such as color and clarity, the quality of the finished stone’s shape and facets will impact value.

Minor issues with symmetry are fairly common with finished loose diamonds, but grades in the fair-to-poor range may result in stones that appear blemished to the naked eye. Diamonds with symmetry issues may, for example, appear slanted.

Tips for Finding Symmetrical Loose Diamonds

Customers who purchase loose diamonds from Israel-Diamonds.com will find that our diamonds 0.50cts or higher come with independent diamond reports. These reports are designed to provide the consumer with a blueprint of the loose diamonds they purchase and to give them peace of mind in regard to a stone’s quality characteristics.

Diamond certifications are issued by gemological laboratories, such as GIA, after a gemologist examines an individual diamond. The loose diamond is studied and assigned a grade based on factors such as symmetry, polish and clarity. In addition, these reports specify the color, cut and carat weight of a distinct diamond.

Israel-Diamonds.com grades all of its large diamonds through professional labs like GIA to provide customers peace of mind when they make a purchase. These reports help buyers know the stones they select are of the quality they desire and are likely to present well in regard to symmetry and other visual characteristics.

There is much more to selecting loose diamonds than considering the size and shape of the stone. When quality matters and presentation does, as well, symmetry is a factor that must be considered.
