Humans Have Long Had a Love Affair with Diamonds
Considering that diamonds are often found deep within the earth, it might be hard to imagine the ancients actually knew what they were. The earliest accounts of diamonds, however, date back to about 500 B.C. While diamond mines are where most of today’s precious stones come from, volcanic activity has been known to bring them closer to the surface. In addition, shallow deposits have also been found in rivers courtesy of geological activity.
Diamonds are Tough
These amazing gemstones are not only the hardest natural substance found in the world, they’re nearly indestructible. While a diamond can be used to cut a diamond, other materials will simply not work. Also, it’s darn near impossible to burn one. In order to “melt” a diamond or burn it, a fire must reach 1292 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s more than 100 degrees hotter than an ordinary house fire.
Diamond Colors Are Amazing
While the purest diamonds are colorless, these stones can also be found in an incredible array of colors. Yellow and brown diamonds are the most frequently found colored diamonds. Red and blue diamonds are among the rarest in the world. Colored diamonds are atomically identical to their clear counterparts, but they may have slight chemical impurities that give them their tinted hues. In addition, structural defects within the stone itself may produce a tone that is different. Diamonds may come in 27 different colors, representing all shades of the rainbow, including orange, pink, green and even purple.

Like many precious and semi-precious gemstones, diamonds have been assigned a month as a birthstone. Those born in April are lucky enough to call this stone their own. Diamonds also have a mystical history behind them. During the Middle Ages, for example, people thought diamonds could cure illnesses of the brain. Diamonds were heated and taken to bed to pull toxins out of an ailing person. Some even believed they worked better if they were used in conjunction with amethysts.
Diamond jewelry offers much more than the sparkle that meets the eye. This classic gemstone remains among the world’s most highly sought after because of its enduring beauty and its ability to stand the test of time.
