4Cs Of a Diamond - Color, Clarity, Cut & Carat

A diamond is an extremely hard, type of crystalline carbon stone which is usually clear. It is formed over millions of years in a process that begins up to 120 miles beneath the earth's surface. In the right conditions, carbon atoms in melting rocks will bond together to form diamond gemstones.

Traditionally, the overall quality and value of a diamond is reflected in four characteristics. These are known as the 4 Cs:
  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Cut
  • Carat Weight

In order to find the right diamond for you, each individual chooses which of these characteristics are most important to them.
